NAME: Nile Freeman
CANON: The Old Guard
AGE: 26
CANON POINT: end of movie
HISTORY: Nile @ the wiki. The Old Guard @ the netflix wiki.
PERSONALITY: The very first thing we see about Nile Freeman is a smile and kindness; she is a good person. Serving in the marines when immortality is thrust upon her, she is thrown into this new life without warning, but she comes with a lot of questions. She is curious and cautious, stubborn and resourceful; when Andy has her in the back of a hummer, Nile literally breaks herself free by kicking out the light (STREET SMARTS!). She stabs Andy in her fight to escape the kidnapping, only agreeing to come along after Andy promises an explanation. Her refusal to give up is evident in their skirmish on the airplane too, where despite Andy breaking two of her limbs, Nile does not back down until the last possible moment, climbing to her feet repeatedly and impressing the 6000 year old Andy in the process.
While Nile has a lot to learn and her fellow immortals have literal centuries of experience behind them, she is far from naive. She takes nothing at face value, always questioning, always asking more. Her instincts are keen, and Andy noting she comes from warriors is not just telling of the nature of immortality - Nile’s strength comes from the family she left behind, the family she chooses to slip away from to avoid hurting any of them further down the line as they aged and she did not. Her mother raised her with strong values after her father was killed in action and Nile prides herself on her family. She struggles with this new gift (or curse) throughout the movie, and what it means for her place in the world. She is skeptical and realistic, burning her fingertips over a fire on purpose in yet another test of her immortality. She isn’t afraid to speak her mind, even in the face of these old farts who speak a million languages. They’re a resource and she will use them to go forward, but she will also call them out. No cowering against their knowledge for Nile. That goes for virtually anyone too, not just the immortal gang. She has a pretty great eyeroll, with a sharp tongue and a sarcastic bite; she holds her own, sticking hard to her own values and not letting anyone walk all over her.
Her decision to go and rescue Andy, Booker, Joe, and Nicky from Merrick and the scientific experimentation instead of returning to her aforementioned family is a turning point for her. It’s acceptance of her new life, and she successfully infiltrates the pharmaceutical corporation near singlehandedly (Copley’s contribution being his key card). Andy tells Nile that she and the other men will keep her safe, but it’s Nile who plays the big damn hero to save them instead, proving her skills and loyalty in the same berth. They welcomed her with open arms, and now she too has become ride or die for them - only without the dying part. She throws herself out a window to protect Andy, demonstrating both recklessness and fidelity. She is cool under pressure, knowing how to calm herself down, whether it’s through a quiet moment with music or a deep breath, Nile is able to keep a level head despite her recklessness. Sometimes the best logic forward is the dumb thing! Even if it’s shooting yourself in the foot to prove you can heal! It worked, didn’t it? She can be impulsive, but in a smart way; her experience in combat makes her quick on her feet.
Nile is also compassionate, caring, and empathetic. Booker betrays them to Merrick in hopes of removing their immortality, and it’s Nile who advocates easy forgiveness. You could argue it’s simply because she is new to the situation, perhaps did not have as much of a stake and was never among those caught to begin with, but she understands him better than the rest in what it means to lose your family. Her quarters in Afghanistan are full of photos of her friends and the background of her phone is her mom and brother. She’s open with her affection for them, and in time, will likely show the same affection for her new family. She already yeeted herself out a window for them, threw herself in front of bullets for Andy, and there are plenty of years left to find new ways of expressing love through physical endangerment - especially when death is no longer a lasting consequence (at least for the foreseeable future, as far as she’s concerned). She might have the smallest number of years in her bank, but her heart more than makes up for it.
When Copley shows the elder immortals all the good they’ve done, Nile hypes it and them up too - and sets her own place in the next part of their journey to keep doing some good in the world. That’s who Nile is - she just wants to do some good.

CRAU: n/a
SPECIES: human, but immortal thanks to healing
APPEARANCE: one! two!
SKILLS: Nile is a trained U.S. Marine. She comes with all the combat and weapons experience of a soldier, having gone through basic training and served for several years, last stationed in Afghanistan. Currently speaks English, French, Spanish, and a little bit of Pashto!
Also, she can heal any injury thus making her Immortal (though this will presumably be lost in the world of meadowlark).
NEW POWER: Kinetic Energy Manipulation. At the seed level, she can absorb the energy from a different object or point of collision and the force bounces back off her, almost like a shield.
POWER REASONING: Nile’s arc in the movie involves her continually packing a surprising amount of punch, proving herself a powerhouse in her own right despite being surrounded by far more experienced warriors. She surprises with her force and constant pushback (both physical and against ideas she thinks are stupid), culminating in her dramatic self yeet when she throws herself at Merrick and out the window to save Andy. The energy she’ll learn to manipulate will be like a manifestation of her sense of self, giving her that extra boost to argue and fight back with something she already has.
